The Most Expensive Domains in the World
Buying domain names can be an investment. Here are some of the most expensive domains ever sold:
- CarInsurance.com – $49.7 million
- Insurance.com – $35.6 million
- VacationRentals.com – $35 million
- PrivateJet.com – $30.1 million
- Voice.com – $30 million
The most expensive top-level domain is .tv (the country code for Tuvalu), sold starting at $100,000 per year.
The first domain was registered in 1985: Symbolics.com, and it still exists today.
The longest domain name has 63 characters, but in practice, it is recommended not to use more than 15 characters.
The Google.com domain was registered in 1997 and… by mistake. Sergey Brin and Larry Page intended to register Googol.com (a mathematical term), but they made a spelling error.
Domains can be purchased at auction. Sometimes companies go bankrupt, and their domains become available.
Over 350 million new domains are registered annually.
